What is NADH?

What is NADH?

NADH (Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide + Hydrogen) is a coenzyme of Vitamin B3 (Niacin) in its reduced form. It occurs naturally in the body and plays a part in the metabolism and cellular respiration processes that generate energy. NADH is a strong reducing agent for redox reactions, and assists in the transfer of electrons to the mitochondria of the cells so they can produce ATP – the chemical needed to harvest energy. One NADH molecule yields 3 molecules of ATP, providing energy to the brain, nerves, muscles and heart.

Because the brain uses so much of the energy our bodies produce, symptoms of any energy deficiency we experience are likely to be first realised in the brain, with symptoms such as lack of concentration and mental fog. People therefore use NADH to help with mental clarity, alertness, concentration and memory.

NADH is a co factor of more than 1000 enzymes in our bodies, and it has been found to facilitate the production levels of healthy brain hormones such as Dopamine and Serotonin. It is presumed that the effects on dopaminergic function are the reason NADH has been reported to relieve some symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. Some studies into the use of NADH as a treatment for Alzheimer’s disease have also shown promising results.

Our immune system requires a lot of energy to function well. Fighting an infection means increased metabolic activity, and high energy demands of white blood cells to eliminate bacteria and viruses from the body. This has led people to the use NADH supplementation to help boost the immune system.

The involvement of NADH in energy production processes means people have also taken a keen interest in use of supplementation as a means of possibly boosting athletic endurance, and also as a potential treatment for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS).

Small studies have also investigated the use of NADH for jet lag, and counteracting its effects on cognitive function and sleepiness. One study of 35 participants in which computer-administered tests were carried out to assess their symptoms of jet lag, found that individuals given the NADH rather than the placebo performed significantly better on 4 cognitive measures, and reported less sleepiness the morning following their flight.
