Why do People Take Lycopene?
Firstly, what is Lycopene?
Lycopene is a member of the carotenoid family, derived from plants with antioxidant properties. It is found in red and pink fruits such as tomatoes, grapefruit or watermelon and is the pigment that gives them their characteristic colour.
What are the benefits of Lycopene?
Lycopene has been linked to having a range of health benefits. One of the main benefits is that Lycopene is a powerful antioxidant which protects the body of damage from free radical stress, which can damage DNA and other cell structures. When free radical levels outnumber antioxidant levels, they can create oxidative stress within your body. This stress is linked to certain chronic diseases, such as heart disease, cancers, diabetes and Alzheimer’s. Whilst reducing the risks of cardiovascular diseases and cancers are among two of the largest potential benefits of lycopene, the carotenoid may have additional benefits should someone have a high-lycopene diet. A study published in the journal of neurology found that lycopene may help prevent strokes, this is because lycopene improves cholesterol levels in addition reducing inflammation which are both factors that can contribute to a stroke.
Lycopene has been subject to numerous studies and ongoing scientific research into potential benefits. It has been associated with a range of uses for health including for Men’s health; protecting prostate health, Skin health; reducing the inflammatory response to UV damage, and Heart health; some doctors believe a daily dose of lycopene or a “tomato pill” may reduce the risk of heart disease by improving blood flow.
Previously our capsules have used lycopene sourced by fermentation. Our lycopene capsules have gone up in price due to the new beadlet technology used in the capsules which is from a natural tomato source. The lycopene is enrobed in a beadlet for improved stability and absorption that other lycopene supplements on the market may not have. This stability helps to prevent the supplement from being affected by the heat and light. Each capsule is the equivalent of 25mg Lycopene.
