What is potassium, and why do we need it?

Potassium is an essential mineral, it is also referred to as an electrolyte. It has many important functions in the body so it is important to get enough in your diet. The recommended daily intake of potassium for adults in the UK is 3500mg.

A variety of whole foods, mostly fruits and vegetables contain potassium. Good food sources include fruits like bananas, oranges, kiwi, melon and dried fruits such as prunes, dates or raisins. Potatoes, sweet potatoes, broccoli, lentils, beans, butternut squash and leafy greens such as spinach are also sources.

Potassium is vital for many processes in the body. It helps to regulate fluid balance, and is needed for sending nerve signals and for normal muscle and heart function.

Potassium rich diets have been associated with health benefits including:

  • Reducing blood pressure – high sodium levels can elevate blood pressure, and studies have found that people that ate the most potassium had reduced blood pressure when compared with those who ate the least. Potassium helps the body to remove excess sodium.

  • Reducing the risk of strokes – Several studies have found that people eating a potassium-rich diet have a lower risk of stroke and reduced risk of heart disease.[¹][²]

  • Helping to prevent osteoporosis – Osteoporosis is a condition that increases the risk of bone fractures, and studies have shown that potassium-rich diets have a positive effect on maintaining bone mineral density.[³][⁴]

People at risk of high blood pressure, osteoporosis or stroke may therefore benefit from potassium supplements, as well as athletes and individuals who take part in long intensive exercise sessions and may lose a significant amount of potassium through sweat.

You can safely take up to 3,700mg of potassium supplements without any obvious harmful effects. However older people’s kidneys may be less able to remove potassium from the blood so may be more at risk. Older people or people with kidney problems should therefore consult with a doctor before taking potassium supplements.
