With the aim of raising awareness National Arthritis Week runs from 7th – 13th October. Arthritis causes pain, swelling and stiffness in the joints, or a joint. There are several types of arthritis, the main types being osteoarthritis, gout and rheumatoid arthritis. It can affect anyone regardless of age, although some types are more common in older people. Unfortunately there is no cure, but there are treatments as well as lifestyle things you can do to manage symptoms and pain whilst helping your quality of life.

Although it may not seem possible, incorporating exercise into your daily life can actually make the symptoms such as pain and swelling seem much better. Low-impact exercises such as swimming, cycling, brisk walking, yoga and pilates are most commonly recommended. If you persevere with them then muscles can become much stronger to provide better support around the joints, as well as helping the joints to become supple and maintain their range of movement, it can reduce the likelihood of them becoming stiff.

As well as this, the overall improvements to health and fitness are beneficial – exercise can help you to maintain a healthy weight, which can also reduce the pressure on joints to ease pain. The natural endorphins that are released into the blood through exercise can also benefit you as they can reduce our perception of pain and can help you to feel good, boosting positivity levels. This is also an important factor in managing symptoms as low mood and depression can often accompany other arthritic symptoms, significantly affecting daily life. Exercise has been widely known to help combat depression. Exercising regularly can also help you to get a good night’s sleep, which can help give the body longer to repair itself.

There are many other supplements that have been widely explored for the purpose of joint care, and also in the treatment of arthritis. Supplements such as Glucosamine and Chondroitin are particularly popular for the maintenance of healthy joints and mobility. They can work well when combined with other supplements that aim to decrease inflammation and provide pain relief. Three of these popular and well researched supplements that have been used in clinical studies are Celadrin, Eggshell Membrane and Turmeric.

 

Ovomet® Eggshell membrane is especially effective in helping joint function, reducing joint pain, and in treating Osteoarthritis and arthritis. There have been several clinical studies amongst the elderly, people suffering with Osteoarthritis, and in athletes. Significant results indicate quick short term benefits from taking a daily dose of just 300mg per day, with significantly positive results in as little as 7 to 10 days showing reductions in joint pain, improved mobility and joint function. Longer term one recent study of arthritic patients showed improvements of 36.3% in the areas of pain, 58.3% improvement in the degree of stiffness and 32.3% in functionality of the joints after 50 days of Ovomet® intake. These results were achieved with a daily dose of just 300mg per day, which equates to just one of our eggshell membrane capsules per day.

Turmeric has been used traditionally for centuries in Indian and Chinese natural medicine for a number of health giving benefits, including as a joint protecting supplement. The main active ingredient Curcumin is a potent antioxidant that can have powerful anti-inflammatory effects so is especially of interest to those suffering from disorders of the joints such as arthritis, and who may be seeking a more natural and alternative pain relief. Many people consider turmeric to be a safe option, rather than taking NSAIDs (Non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs). Studies suggest that turmeric supplementation can reduce the symptoms such as joint pain and stiffness, redness, swelling, decreased range of motion. The addition of black pepper (piperine) is said to enhance the body’s absorption of curcumin as it boosts the bioavailability of turmeric. That is why we have formulated both our turmeric capsules and powder with the addition of black pepper for maximum health benefit.

Widely used and a natural alternative to NSAIDs there is also plenty of science behind Celadrin®, with numerous clinical studies showing positive results. A 2001 study was conducted on 64 patients that suffered knee pain, and it was determined that Celadrin® when taken orally reduced pain, and provided improvements to knee range of motion, and overall function over a placebo. Both oral and topical applications of Celadrin have been shown to be suitable and effective in studies.
