running race

Following the success and popularity of last year’s reimagined event, it has once again been decided to open up the Melmerby 10K course for the whole month of May for another virtual 10k. Again this event allows runners the opportunity to take part on their chosen date, and run this enjoyable course beginning and ending in the picturesque village, north of Ripon. As a regular sponsor of the event supplying prizes to the various category winners, and free samples to all runners that take part for the last 4 years, Hellenia couldn’t be more thrilled.

All you need to do is make sure you register 48 hours before the date you wish to run the course – between 1st – 31st May, this will allow the event organisers to monitor participating numbers. The apps Strava/Garmin can be used to record your completion time, or just send a photo of your finish time from your device. There will be no marshals around the course but there will be plenty of direction arrows and warning signs in place to ensure everyone finishes the 10K course safely without any problems. Prizes will be given to 1st, 2nd, 3rd place men and women, and a memento of the event to all participants. A contribution for your entry is respectfully asked to cover expenses for the event, and any profit will be donated to local good causes. Ranging from £5 - £20, it is up to you how much of a fee you want to pay.

In addition to the virtual 10K race there is even more to look forward to this year, with a 3.5Km fun run, and added 100m races (e.g. sack race, egg and spoon race, wet sponge race, sprint) being scheduled as an event on 8th May. This is to give the youngsters an opportunity to take part and race. (Minimum age for the 3.5Km race 9yrs, children under 9 can run with an accompanying adult). The event starts at 10:30am and the entry fee is £5, with fun activities for children of all ages. There are 150 spots up for grabs, so enter now to guarantee a place. Compete in all events or just take part in your favourites. There are refreshments available in the village hall. It should be a lovely fun-filled day for all the family, with awards for all winners, along with finisher’s medals and goody bags for all competitors.

And fear not, its back! Later in the year the main Melmerby 10k road race of old will return. Same course, different month! It will now take place in October, and what will hopefully be a cooler month for more runner friendly conditions. October 9th is the date for your diary. The race starts at 11:30am and entry fee is £16 - £18, with 350 places available. A fun and fast course suitable for all running abilities, marshals and villagers will be there to cheer everyone on along the way. Finishers medals and goody bags are going to all competitors, and 26 individual categories trophies are to be awarded, and a team prize for both men and ladies.

So if you are looking for a new fitness challenge this year with stunning rural scenery to enjoy, why not sign up. Once again Hellenia is very proud to sponsor and show our support for this local event, and we’d love to see you there!
