Managing stress and anxiety
It's okay to feel worried or anxious during these unprecedented times. This is a natural and normal response to uncertain situations. Lack of social interaction and disrupted routine can leave you feeling lonely and bored. Consider ways you can continue to connect with family and friends through online resources or over the phone. Maintaining relationships is an import part of life and wellbeing. Sharing your worries, feelings and the things you are doing to cope with others can help them too. If you don’t feel you have anyone to speak to, you can find available support groups online to contact.
Try to occupy the mind and stay busy by taking up a hobby, reading, exercise or learning a new skill! This could give you some light relief from negative thoughts and feelings. If the activities you usually enjoy are unavailable and can’t be enjoyed from home, consider how you can adapt them or look for similar activities. You can find lots of free tutorials and courses online. As mentioned before, exercise is excellent for your body and brain, it releases endorphins, such as serotonin and norepinephrine, which can lead to lower levels of stress and fatigue. Regular exercise can reduce the levels of cortisol in your bloodstream, which also leads to decreased stress levels.
Make time to go outside. If exercise isn’t your thing, you can find other outdoor activities such as gardening or walking. Keeping moving, even a small amount is much more beneficial that just sitting at home. Fresh air and sunlight can do the world of good. Even if you are unable to go outside then arrange a nice place to relax by a window to let in air and sunshine. Fresh air can also help you to sleep.
Money or family worries may be leaving you feeling more anxious than usual, which can make it harder to switch off and fall asleep. Other things may be affecting your sleep such as lack of routine, leading you to have later nights. Maintaining a regular sleep pattern is good for our health, with lack of sleep affecting mood and productivity. Try not to consume caffeine after a certain time, avoid screens an hour before bed and create a restful environment.
Be aware of how much media you are watching. With the news updates constantly, it can be hard to avoid. If it is causing you worry or stress, try to limit your exposure to it. Remember to try your best to focus on the positives.
