Plant sterols or 'phytosterols' are compound found naturally in variuos plant-derived foods. Although referred to as 'plant fats' they are chemically steroidal alcohols and are similar to natural compounds produced by the body such as cholesterol, aldosterone and Vitamin D. The most remarkable member of the phytosterol family is beta-sitosterol.

Plant sterols and plant stanol esters have been shown to lower/reduce blood cholesterol.  High cholesterol is a risk factor in the development of coronary heart disease.
