It plays a part in the formation of collagen, a substance important for bones and connective tissues including skin, tendon, and cartilage. Lysine is necessary for tissue repair and growth, and for producing antibodies, enzymes, and hormones.
L-lysine also helps the absorption of calcium to ensure good bone growth. It needs other nutrients such as niacin, vitamin B6, riboflavin, vitamin C, glutamic acid and iron in order to be properly dealt with by the body.
Without enough lysine or any other of the eight essential amino acids, the body cannot build protein to sustain muscle tissue.
